Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder 17 cm / 6-3/4", TC Gold

The Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder, 17 cm TC Gold is intended for procedures requiring additional reach. During body wall closure in medium and large breeds, a shorter instrument positions the veterinary surgeon's hand close to the incision margin, where it may obstruct the view of the needle as it enters and leaves the tissue. The additional length raises the hand clear of the veterinary surgical field and improves visibility. It also provides greater leverage when passing a needle through a denser body wall, which reduces the force applied at the fingers.

The jaws carry TC Gold tungsten carbide inserts. Secure retention of the needle is particularly important at this working distance, as any rotation within the jaws is magnified by the time it reaches the tissue. The integrated scissor section is retained, allowing the surgeon to tie and trim with one instrument. This size is commonly specified within canine spay packs and general veterinary surgery packs, and is a suitable second instrument alongside a 14 cm holder.

Why select 17 cm in preference to 14 cm?

The additional length keeps the hand clear of the veterinary surgical field during body wall closure and provides greater leverage through denser tissue.

Is it suitable for skin suturing?

It may be used, although it is less manoeuvrable. A 14 cm or 12 cm instrument is preferable for fine skin closure.
