The Balfour Abdominal Retractor holds a laparotomy incision open in three directions at once. Two lateral blades retract the body wall to either side along a ratcheted bar, while a centre blade attaches at the end of the frame and retracts the cranial or caudal margin. This third point of retraction is what distinguishes a Balfour from a simple lateral retractor, since an abdominal incision that is only held apart sideways tends to close at its ends.

This configuration is supplied with a 45x80 mm centre blade, lateral blades of 35 mm and 70 mm, and an opening width of 180 mm. The 180 mm span suits medium sized patients and the shorter centre blade suits a shallower body wall. The centre blade is removable, so the retractor can be used with lateral retraction alone where the ends of the incision do not require support.
