Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder Left Hand 14 cm, 5-1/2"

The Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder, Left Hand, 14 cm, provides the most widely used needle holder size in a left handed configuration. The ratchet is cut in reverse, so that the lock disengages under a natural movement of the left thumb. Without this adjustment, a left handed veterinarian surgeon must either rotate the wrist to reach the release position or apply greater grip pressure than the tissue requires. Both approaches reduce accuracy and increase hand fatigue over the course of a veterinary surgical list.

The integrated scissor section is retained, so the veterinarian can secure a knot and trim the suture ends using the same instrument. Approximately one in ten veterinary doctors is left handed, and the provision of correctly configured instruments represents a straightforward improvement in working conditions. Veterinary clinics are advised to hold at least one left handed needle holder within their general inventory.

Why is a reversed ratchet necessary?

A standard ratchet releases naturally under the right thumb. Left handed use otherwise requires a wrist rotation or excessive grip pressure.

Does it retain the cutting section?

Yes. The Olsen-Hegar scissor blades are retained, allowing the veterinary surgeon to tie and trim with one instrument.
