The Weitlaner retractor 24.5 cm / 9-1/2" with Teeth 3:4 blunt, is the largest Weitlaner offered. Its purpose is straightforward. Certain procedures require an incision long enough that a standard retractor cannot span it, and in those cases the margin must either be held by hand throughout or by an instrument of this size. The arms open to a substantial aperture and the frame sits far enough from the wound that it does not obstruct access at all.

The instrument is used in large animal surgery, in extended approaches in giant breeds, and where prolonged retraction of a long incision is required. It is correspondingly heavy and is not suited to small or shallow wounds, where its weight would distort the tissue. Blunt prongs are specified so the tissue is held by pressure rather than penetration across the seven contact points of the 3:4 arrangement.

When is a retractor of this size required?

When the incision is long enough that a standard retractor cannot span it and manual retraction would otherwise be needed throughout.

Can it be used on small incisions?

It is not suited to them. The weight of the instrument would distort a small or shallow wound.
