Foerster Forcep 25 cm / 10" Smooth Jaws Straight

The Foerster Forcep, 25 cm / 10" straight with smooth jaws, is a long ring jawed instrument used principally for holding swabs. The circular jaws grip a folded swab securely and the ratchet holds it in place, allowing antiseptic solution to be applied to a veterinary surgical site without the hand approaching the prepared field. The 25 cm length is deliberate, as it keeps the operator well clear of the area being prepared. Smooth jaws are specified here rather than serrated, which means the instrument grips by conforming to the swab rather than by biting into it.

This is preferable where the forcep may also be applied to tissue, since smooth jaws cause less injury. Beyond site preparation, the instrument is used for swabbing within a cavity, retrieving material, and holding tissue where an atraumatic ring jaw is appropriate. It is a standard component of most surgical preparation trolleys.
