Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder 12 cm 4-3/4", TC Gold

The Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder, 12 cm, 4-3/4" is the most compact among needle holders. A shorter body places the working jaws closer to the hand, which improves control over the placement of each suture. This makes the instrument well suited to small patients and to closures where accuracy is more important than reach. The Olsen-Hegar design includes a short scissor section positioned behind the jaws. The veterinary surgeon can therefore secure a knot and trim the suture ends using a single instrument, without pausing to exchange for scissors.

Across a full veterinary surgical list, this reduces both handling time and the number of instruments required on the tray. The jaws carry TC Gold tungsten carbide inserts. Carbide holds the needle securely and prevents rotation during a pass, and it retains that grip considerably longer than plain stainless steel. Veterinarians new to the Olsen-Hegar pattern should note that the cutting section sits close to the jaws, so a period of familiarisation is advisable. The instrument is recommended for feline procedures, small breed surgery, dental closures and skin repair.

How does an Olsen-Hegar differ from a Mayo-Hegar?

The Olsen-Hegar includes a scissor section behind the jaws, allowing suture to be cut with the same instrument. The Mayo-Hegar grips only.

Is 12 cm suitable for canine surgery?

It is suitable for skin closure in small breeds. For canine abdominal work, the 14 cm or 17 cm sizes provide more appropriate reach.

What does TC Gold indicate?

TC Gold denotes tungsten carbide jaw inserts, identified by gold-coloured finger rings.
