The Mayo-Hegar Needle Holder, 18 cm / 7" TC Gold combines extended reach with tungsten carbide jaws in a pattern that has no cutting section. It addresses a specific requirement, namely veterinary surgeons who need additional length for deeper abdominal and large breed closure but prefer that no blades are positioned near the needle. At 18 cm the hand remains clear of the incision, which improves the view of the needle as it enters and leaves the tissue, and the instrument provides useful leverage through a heavier body wall. A longer instrument requires a steady grip, as any tremor at the fingers is amplified at the tip.

The tungsten carbide inserts are therefore of particular benefit in this size. Needle rotation that would be a minor inconvenience in a shorter holder becomes a more significant source of inaccuracy at this working distance. The instrument is recommended for canine and large breed soft veterinary tissue surgery, thoracic and deep abdominal procedures, and theatres in which cutting is reserved to scissors.
