The Mayo-Hegar Needle Holder, 16 cm is a straightforward instrument supplied in standard stainless steel without cutting blades or carbide inserts. The length is well judged for general veterinry surgery, providing sufficient reach for body wall closure while remaining comfortable in the hand. For this reason the 16 cm / 6-1/4" Mayo-Hegar is a common component of standard veterinary surgical packs. The stainless specification keeps the cost proportionate, which is a relevant consideration when several packs are being assembled rather than a single instrument purchased.

The holder may be sharpened and serviced conventionally and will provide extended service with reasonable care. It should be noted that plain stainless jaws become polished more rapidly than carbide inserts under heavy daily use, and that needle slip may eventually develop. This instrument is therefore best specified for rotation packs, reserve trays, teaching sets, and clinics developing their instrument inventory in a measured manner.
