Weitlaner Retractor 20 cm / 8" Teeth 3:4 Blunt

The Weitlaner Retractor, 20 cm / 8" with 3:4 blunt prongs, is a large self-retaining retractor for extended incisions. At this length the instrument does more than simply open a wider wound. The frame and ratchet sit a considerable distance from the tissue, which is important during procedures where the veterinary surgeon and an assistant are both working within the field and a shorter retractor would crowd the site. The arms are correspondingly stronger to hold the tension of a large wound margin without deflecting.

The blunt prong configuration is appropriate where the retracted tissue must remain intact, and the 3:4 arrangement distributes the load across the margin rather than concentrating it. Applications include large breed soft tissue surgery, extended approaches and procedures requiring prolonged retraction. Where dense muscle causes the blunt prongs to slip under load, the sharp configuration should be used instead.

It sits further from the tissue, which prevents crowding when more than one person is working within the surgical field.

Does a larger retractor need more force to hold?

No. The ratchet holds the set tension regardless of size, but the arms must be strong enough not to deflect.
