The Weitlaner Retractor, 14 cm / 5-1/2" with 3:4 blunt prongs is the atraumatic counterpart to the sharp pattern of the same size. The prongs are rounded rather than pointed, so they hold tissue by pressure against the wound margin instead of penetrating it. This is the correct configuration wherever a puncture would be consequential, including approaches near nerves, adjacent to vessels, in thin skin, and in soft tissue procedures where the retracted layer must remain intact. The trade is that blunt prongs rely on friction and tension to stay in place, so they are more likely to slip out of dense muscle than a sharp pattern.
