Mayo-Hegar Needle Holder 20 cm / 8"

The Mayo-Hegar Needle Holder, 20 cm / 8" is the longest needle holder in the range and is intended for specialist application. It is appropriate for large animal practitioners suturing equine and bovine tissue, for closure of deep body cavities, and for procedures conducted through a restricted approach into a field that cannot be reached comfortably with a standard instrument. In these circumstances the additional length allows the veterinary surgeon to maintain visibility of the operative site rather than working with the hand obstructing the view.

Outside these applications the instrument is cumbersome, and it is not suitable for fine skin suturing. It is supplied in standard stainless steel, which is a reasonable specification for an instrument used periodically rather than on every procedure, since the benefit of tungsten carbide is most apparent where usage is frequent. The holder should be regarded as the extended reach option within a comprehensive set, held alongside a 14 cm or 16 cm instrument for routine work.
