Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder 19 cm / 7-1/2", TC Gold

The Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder, 19 cm TC Gold is the longest instrument of this pattern in the range. It is intended for procedures in which shorter holders do not provide adequate reach. These include deep abdominal closure in giant breeds, suturing at the base of a body cavity, work conducted through a limited approach into a deep field, and large animal soft tissue surgery. In these circumstances the additional length allows the veterinary surgeon to maintain a clear view of the operative site.

The characteristics of a longer instrument should be understood before purchase. Any movement at the fingers is amplified at the working tip, so the instrument requires a steady hand and is not well suited to fine superficial suturing. It should therefore be regarded as a specialist addition to a set rather than a primary holder. The tungsten carbide jaws are of particular value at this length, since needle rotation is more difficult to correct when the tip is positioned at a distance from the hand.
